Acton Swing Bridge design was based on a 1893 design for Town Swing Bridge by J.A.Saner. His paper (No.3203,dated 23January 1900)
was published in the I.C.E. Minutes of Proceedings. It describes how he placed the empty shell of an old boiler under the centre of gravity of Town Bridge which enabled one man to turn the bridge by hand through 90° in 30 seconds.
